EFFICIENT COOLING

Sugars

Sugar is a hygroscopic product, which means that it absorbs water and becomes lumpy as a result. This problem is frequently encountered one when storing sugars. To avoid moisture accumulation, it is vital to cool sugars sufficiently in the final process step, before storing the product in silos or big-bags.

The Mosman heat exchanger ensures that the cooling process is completed both economically and efficiently. To make sure that condensation is avoided during the cooling process too, dry air is injected into the heat exchanger, where necessary. It absorbs excess moisture and removes the risk of caking during the cooling process. The amount of dry air required is calculated in advance and then optimized during commissioning.

The heat exchanger features pillow plates, through which the heat-exchanging medium flows and cools the sugar down. The sugar itself then flows evenly through the plates. A so-called vibrating bottom, or a similar outlet system, ensures that the sugars flow slowly and evenly through the plates, so that every particle of the bulk solids comes into contact with the pillow plates for the same length of time. A temperature sensor in the product outlet maintains the pillow plates at the appropriate temperature, so that the bulk solids are at the temperature required when the process step has been completed. This indirect temperature exchange is up to 90% more energy efficient than direct temperature exchange would be (in a fluid bed, for example).
